On June 3, 2022, officers from the Niagara Falls Police Department were forced to use lethal force against a suspect outside of a pharmacy drive-thru when the man pulled a knife and rushed the officers.

For the duration of this video there is no sound. That is because for the first thirty seconds of a body worn camera's activation the audio is still buffering. This is a design flaw in body worn camera systems that has existed since the first units were put out into operations.

The suspect, 29-year-old Reginald D. Barnes, was being investigated as part of a report of a suspicious person behind a pharmacy. While the officers were attempting to detain Barnes, he pulls away tripping over his own feet and rolling backwards. Officers immediately attempted to deploy a less-lethal Taser to subdue him, but the device failed to obtain a proper connection prompting Barnes to draw a knife and rush the officer with the Taser in his hand.

The officer and Barnes are then engaged in a brief suspect where the officer with the Taser sustains several minor injuries from the knife and being pushed against his patrol car. Barnes then pulls back and attempts to move on the second officer. As he moves on the second officer, lethal force is deployed to stop the threat. Following the use of lethal force, the officers then immediately begin providing Barnes with life-saving aid.

Both Barnes and the injured officer were transported to a nearby medical facility where Barnes was listed as in critical condition. They would both recover and the incident is under investigation. Barnes was on probation for first-degree sexual abuse.
