(NSFW) Hostage Taker Killed During Intense Pharmacy Standoff

Graphic surveillance footage released by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, shows the moments officers fatally shot a knife wielding hostage taker at the Keansburg Pharmacy on January 6th, 2022.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., the suspect, later identified as 55-year-old James Sutton, entered the pharmacy armed with a large knife. Reports from 9-1-1 calls have indicated that Sutton evacuated the building; however forced one employee to stay behind the counter.

Shortly after the incident began, responding officers were dispatched to the pharmacy located on 199 Main Street. Officers performed de-escalation tactics on Sutton, but he continued to comply. In a last-ditch effort to prevent further harm to the hostage, one officer positioned himself behind the counter, where he discharged a taser and charged Sutton. During the physical altercation, Sutton thrusted his knife at the officer, striking him in what appears to be the arm. In response to the stabbing, three officers reportedly discharged their weapons, fatally striking Sutton.

The officer who was stabbed is recovering, according to the Attorney General's Office.
