Mexican authorities reportedly captured Ovidio Guzman, son of imprisoned notorious Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman which lead to destruction and citywide gun battles in Culiacan on Jan. 5, 2023.

Cartel fighters mobilized and locked down neighborhoods and roads going in and out of the city. Reports are also suggesting that the Culiacan International Airport is under attack and all flights have been cancelled. One witness video clip shows a Mexican Air Force passenger jet landing while automatic gunfire rips through the air.

The arrest and many other recent counter cartel operations are likely being carried out by the Mexican government in order to look tough on crime prior to US President Biden's planned visit to Mexico next week.
