This combination of security camera and police bodycam footage shows Mesquite police responding to an armed 16-year old suspect in the Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy, a 5th-12th grade charter school. The officers attempt to de-escalate but ultimately shoot the student as he moves to point the weapon. Despite the censorship, the subject matter may be difficult to watch. Therefore, viewer discretion is advised.

The video begins with a teacher or staffer who has been in contact with the student. She is communicating to him through the door in which she's situated. Pointing out to the officers that the gun is between the suspect's legs, she asks that the suspect trust her before the police take over.

One officer attempts to de-escalate the student. It's important to note that only one officer is doing the talking. Multiple voices and stimuli can exacerbate an already emotionally charged suspect and situation.

At 0:56, the footage switches to the bodycam of the other officer. From his perspective, the suspect is visible on the far side of the room. At approximately 01:00 the student reaches for the weapon, at which point the officers fire. Then, at 1:06, a hallway security camera shows the shoot. The officer on the right, who had previously been shown negotiating, fires several times with his handgun. The room's door swings closed, and when the officer on the left opens it, the suspect is standing, and appears to still be armed. The officers open fire again, hitting him in the leg. Although it is not shown herein, the student survived the injury and was transported to an area hospital. Mesquite police confirms that the officers fired 19 rounds, and this reaction was to the teen pointing the weapon- there is no indication that he fired. It is important to note, of course, that a suspect doesn't have to actually fire to create a deadly force situation.
