IDF Commander Owns Misidentfication that Lead to Civilian Casualties

In an official statement from the Israeli Southern Command, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi issued an apology for a strike that killed seven employees of the World Central Kitchen. He says that the IDF has already completed its preliminary investigation into the strike and that the findings were shared with him at the IDF’s Southern Command base.

“WCK is an organization whose people work across the globe, including in Israel to do good in difficult conditions. The IDF works together closely with the World Central Kitchen and greatly appreciates the important work that they do.” Halevi during the apology. “It was a mistake that followed a misidentification, at night, during a war, in very complex conditions. It shouldn’t have happened.”

In response to the incident, and to improve on their own identification processes, the Israeli Defense Force has established a new humanitarian command center to improve coordination and aid distribution in Gaza to impacted civilians. Hopefully, this will allow the IDF better situational awareness to where aid workers are located and prevent future casualties.
