Flying Fortress Drops Glide Bombs on Cologne

Historic footage recorded in May of 1944 shows glide bombs being deployed over Cologne, Germany by B-17 Flying Fortress pilots from the 427th Bomb Squadron.

The 427th Bomb Squadron was a key unit of the United States Army Air Forces during the second World War. Assigned to the Eighth Air Force and based in England, the squadron dominantly operated B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. They were responsible for conducting strategic bombing missions over German-occupied Europe, targeting the vital industrial and military installations operated by Axis forces.

Known for their precision and courage, the 427th Bomb Squadron faced formidable challenges in the form of enemy fighters and anti-aircraft fire during daylight raids. They attacked aircraft factories, oil refineries, transportation networks, and other strategic targets, aiming to disrupt German war efforts. The squadron endured significant losses throughout their bombing campaigns, with many aircraft and crew members falling victim to enemy fire. Despite these setbacks, the 427th Bomb Squadron maintained their resolve and continued to deliver devastating blows to the enemy.

Their missions played a crucial role in weakening German infrastructure and military capabilities, contributing to the ultimate Allied victory in Europe. The bravery and sacrifice of the 427th Bomb Squadron stand as a testament to the heroism of the aircrews who fought in the challenging and perilous skies of World War II.
