Border Clashes Intensify on Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan Border

Footage from a Tajik military group has been released today showing a brief but intense engagement on the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border. The border clashes there so far have killed at least 81 people.

Both the governments of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have confirmed that at least 81 people are dead after intense border clashes took place between September 14th and September 16th. The video above was recorded on September 17th, indicating Russia's involvement and urgent requirement for a peaceful resolution to the situation did not have much of an impact.

For those of you who are out of the loop, and only recognize the country Kyrgyzstan because you made a brief stop there on your way into Afghanistan, here's what you need to know. Border issues between these two nations stem from the days of the Soviet Union. Back when both nations were members of the USSR, Moscow attempted to divide them under their control into ethnically-based republics in a process known as National Territorial Delimitation. We can get more in-depth on this topic, but I won't bore you with the specifics.

Essentially, no one in the countries agreed to these border changes, and now there's a 984 kilometer long border that neither side entirely agrees with. As a result, clashes like this occur from time to time. With Russia's focus on Ukraine distracting them from other responsibilities, more and more clashes like this are likely to occur. Russia doesn't have the capacity to flex their muscles in the region due to cramps caused by guys in blue and yellow duct tape making TikTok videos next to burning Russian tanks.
