The People’s Army of Vietnam is ranked 20th in the world by Global Fire Power. The communist nation’s military relies heavily on conscription which requires service from every male ages 18 to 25 years old, although females can volunteer to join as well.
Although China supported Vietnam during America’s war against the Vietnamese government, that relationship has since soured as China continues to lay claim to territory within the South China Sea that has been long claimed by Vietnam.
Those tensions have caused the two former foes, US and Vietnam, to put the fight behind them as they focus on the current competition, China. As evidence of such, China was uninvited from the RIMPAC naval exercise this year and was replaced by Vietnam. This was the first ever RIMPAC in history in which Vietnam partook.
