What an Average Mounted Patrol in Afghanistan Looked Like

Published 11 months ago

The noise you're hearing at the beginning of this video is not the sound of a gunfight. It's the sound a barely armored humvee makes when it rolls down the road in Afghanistan.

If you mistook the beginning of this video as a chaotic firefight, I wouldn't fault you for it. What you're looking at and hearing however is the sound of an armored high-back humvee as it shakes its way down some random street in Northern Afghanistan. It's not the noise you would expect to hear coming from a vehicle made for war, but it's the noise you get when you roll a couple tons of armor plating down a dirt-road in the middle-of-nowhere Afghanistan, where even pavement is a luxury they simply don't have access to.

Not all combat footage is exciting. It's just a fact of life. Sometimes, combat is just an action you participate in while moving from place to place to deny your enemy the ability to maneuver through that same territory as you. Rest assured however, this simple mounted-patrol through no-where Afghanistan could have erupted into a gunfight at any moment for the Marines in this video, and that was something they were prepared for.
