Footage from early in Operation Iraqi Freedom, possibly filmed in Ramadi, shows the incident in which an Al Qaeda sniper is isolated and then destroyed inside a mosque minaret by a US M-1 Abrams tank.

During this period, US troops were barred from entering or raiding mosques to minimize strife with the local population. The insurgents took advantage of this limitation and mosques were used as insurgent headquarters and weapons caches.

On more than one occasion, enemy snipers wrongly interpreted the US guidance and thought they would be able to snipe at US troops from the mosque minaret tower with impunity. This video demonstrates that although US troops may not have been able to enter and clear mosques at the time, they could certainly return fire if engaged.
