Suspect Gains Control of Holstered Weapon, Fires Shot Injuring Officer

On July 04, 2021, Officers from the LVMPD special events unit were working a concert at Allegiant Stadium when they witnessed a man push a security officer and flee the area.

The by-standing officers began in a foot chase, where they eventually caught up to the suspect and struggled to get him into custody. As the struggle continued, the man began resisting even more and became more aggressive toward the officers.

Before entering the elevator, the responding officers were accompanied by another group of officers to assist the escort of the suspect. As they entered the elevator, the suspect grabbed hold of one officers holster, managing to put enough pressure on the trigger, causing the firearm to discharge a round into the officers leg. An additional officer was hit by the ricochet, where he sustained an injury to his ankle.

The 28-year-old suspect has not been publicly identified. He is however facing the following charges:
-Battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm
-Battery with a deadly weapon on a first responder
-Resisting a public officer with a firearm
-Discharging a firearm within a structure.
