Riverines Use MK-19's Grandpa to Smoke Check Vietcong

Riverines on a riverboat in Vietnam use the MK-18 crank operated grenade launcher to lay waste to Vietcong positions while on a riverboat patrol.

Today I learned that the MK-19 has a grandpa. It was called the MK-18 Mod 0, and it's a 40x46mm grenade launcher with a split breech mechanism that allows the shooter to manually crank 40mm grenades out. It was dominantly used by Riverines and Navy SEALs from the back of small craft water boats, and it was employed against the Vietcong on several occasions with great success.

This is the first time I've ever seen footage of the weapon system being used in combat. In fact, it's the first time I've ever seen the weapon system at all. I just assumed the MK-19 was the first iteration of this weapon system.

The more you know.
