Officers Trigger Discipline Prevents Shooting Involving Small Children

On July 24th, 2021, officers from the Columbus Police Department responded to a shooting near a major intersection, which resulted in a high speed chase. After receiving nearly a dozen reports indicating a car accident had occurred at a major intersection on Cleveland Ave., near downtown Columbus, a police helicopter in the vicinity began tracking the reports and provided aerial surveillance for responding officers.

While circling the reported area, the Columbus Police helicopter spotted a silver colored sedan driving down an alleyway at a high rate of speed. After providing the information to ground officers, a group of patrol cars made contact with the car and attempted a traffic stop. Upon turning on their lights, the car attempted to flee the area, where a short pursuit began.

As seen in the body worn footage, responding officers engaged in the pursuit with weapons drawn, ready to use lethal force if needed. With information of a potential armed suspect, the leading patrol vehicle made a swift and fast pit maneuver, which gave a secondary cruiser the opportunity to box the fleeing vehicle in. Upon conducting their pit, the officers refrained from firing their service weapons at the vehicle, as there were small children located in the car.

Luckily for all involved, the female driver and male passenger appeared to cooperate, as officers apprehended both of them and moved the children to safety. If it weren't for these officers courage and trigger discipline, a brutal officer involved shooting could have cost the lives of innocent children.

At this time, the Columbus Police Department have not released a full report on this incident. If you happen to stumble upon any additional information regarding this situation, please feel free to comment below.
