Officer Dragged By Car After Domestic Violence Incident

On May 24, 2021, one officer was left with multiple broken bones after a teenage woman ran him over during a domestic dispute between her and her boyfriend.

At around 11:30 a.m. Evansville Police were flagged down by a man on the side of the road, where he explained to Officer Nathan Jones he needed assistance leaving the area because he was just involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

As officer Jones and the male subject were discussing what had just happened, the girlfriend, 18-year-old Maeling Smith pulled up to the location and began confronting them with erratic behavior. Exiting her car multiple times and screaming, officer Jones repeated to stay in the vehicle. Smith continued to ignore officer Jones request, where he then confronted the female suspect and attempted to detain her. As he began detaining Smith, the car was slammed into reverse. Smith began dragging officer Jones after he was "clothes lined" by the driver side door and dragged almost an entire block before breaking free from the car.

Recovering and regaining his composer, officer Jones drew his firearm on Smith where she then places the car in park and exits the vehicle. Officer Jones successfully detained Smith while handling multiple broken bones he had just acquired.

There is still and ongoing investigation, but as of recent Smith was set on a $1,500 bond.
