Historical footage from the WWII Pacific theater shows American troops using a flamethrower to burn and flush out subterranean Japanese fighting positions. The video ends as one of the Japanese soldiers runs out of his burning bunker but is rapidly shot down by US forces.

The US Army introduced its man-portable flamethrower in 1942 and it saw significant use throughout the war. However, the backpack flamethrowers had an extremely short range were susceptible to catastrophic malfunctions caused by enemy fire. The military soon transitioned to tank-mounted flamethrowers, commonly called flame tanks.
