(NSFW) SDPD Trainee Exchanges Shots With Armed Motorcyclist After Crash

On September 28th, 2021, one officer (Field Training Officer; FTO) and a trainee from the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) engaged in short vehicle chase with an armed motorcyclist, after he refused to stop during a traffic violation regarding an obstructed license plate. During the short vehicle pursuit, the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Jesus Medina Morales, ultimately lost control of his motorcycle and crashed.

Upon Morales crashing, he ditched his motorcycle, further leading the SDPD trainee and officer on a foot chase. Later reports and radio communications indicated that during the foot chase, Morales opened fire on the responding officers. In response, the SDPD trainee returned fire, striking Morales multiple times and subduing him.

Unfortunately, the trainee did not have his body worn camera activated during the incident, however the FTO body worn footage and area surveillance cameras captured small segments. After the SDPD trainee subdued Morales; Morales was taken to an area hospital for his injuries. He was treated for his injuries and was later booked on October 3rd, 2021 and remains in jail with a bail set at $3 million. As of October 9th, Morales is currently pending several felony charges.

During the crime scene investigation, Morales' firearm recovered at the scene was an unregistered, "ghost-gun". According to police, Morales’ gun jammed after a live round misfed and caused it to malfunction.
