Body camera footage released by the Farmington Police Department, shows the moments a fugitive that escaped jail in Colorado, pulled a firearm and shot an officer point blank.

On January 7th, 2022, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Officer Joseph Barreto was in the area of E. Main St. and N. Tucker Ave, looking for a reported drunk driver. While patrolling the area on foot, officer Barreto observed a male and female walking near a fence line who matched the description of the reported drunk driver.

As shown in the body camera footage, officer Barreto began questioning the two, where he shortly after requested them to take a seat because they were being detained. Almost immediately, the male suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Elias Buck, drew a firearm, and began firing at officer Barreto, striking him in the arm. Despite being struck by gunfire, officer Barreto drew his firearm and returned fire against Buck.

Buck fled the scene of the crime, while additional responding officers arrived and began rendering medical aid to officer Barreto. During a later investigation, officers were informed that Buck had recently escaped from La Plata County Sheriff's Office on December 27th, 2021. At the time of this writing, the U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for reliable information which leads to Buck's arrest, along with $5,000 from the La Plata County Sheriff's Office in Colorado.

Buck is described as six feet and one inch tall with green eyes and blonde hair, weighing about 185 pounds. Anyone with information on the incident can leave a tip at the Farmington police detective tip line at 505-599-1068.
