As soon as the man pulls open the door, the car thief throws the vehicle into reverse dragging the owner into a nearby brick wall and breaking his arm.

Spatial awareness is the name of the game when you're unarmed and confronting someone in a potentially dangerous situation like this. It's very easy to be overcome with anger and lose sight and awareness of your surroundings. Sometimes, especially like in this instance where the man was entirely disarmed by his own government, your best course of action is to let bad guy win so that you don't end getting killed.
