(NSFW) LAPD Fend Off Random Knife-Wielding Attacker

This combination of security camera and bodycam footage, provided by the Los Angeles Police Department, shows a recent incident wherein police officers, called to investigate a sexual assault, are attacked by a person who is completely un-connected to the crime, seemingly at random. Viewer's discretion is advised.

One of the tips often taught to rookie police officers is to constantly play mental "what-if" games- that is, constantly create scenarios and contemplate one's responses to them. "What would I do if this guy pulls a gun", etc. The idea is to keep looking for threats and kick-start one's OODA loop by already having considered a response. Obviously, these officers aren't rookies, but I don't think anyone was prepared for this one. Again: this suspect, one Kyle Harpt, 32 years of age, is a completely different person from the suspect they're looking for in regard to a sexual assault.

Harpt is shown here in possession of a knife with a 3.5 inch blade, which he uses to try to stab one of the LAPD officers. After that went about as well as he had any right to expect, Haupt was transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and booked for attempted murder. No officers or other persons were harmed.
