(NSFW) LA Transit Police Vs. Suspect with Knife (05-02-23)

This footage contains bodycam, car cam, and bystander cellphone footage of an LAPD Officer Involved Shooting with a knife-wielding suspect. Viewer discretion is advised.

The footage begins with a man reporting to the responding officers. He shows them a picture he has taken of the suspect. Off-camera, the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Mason Swenor, brandished a knife at the man. At 01:08, audio kicks in on the bodycam, with the officers telling the suspect to put the knife away. Instead, the suspect seems to rush at the officers before changing his mind and diverting, fleeing to the officers' right. As they ascend the stairs in pursuit, Swenor strikes an 74-year-old woman in the head. At 02:27, Swenor stabs a 61-year-old man in the shoulder as he flees.

The officers corner Swenor in the parking lot, next to a white sedan. At 3:03, Swenor is warned to drop the knife or he'll be shot. He appears to drop the knife at his side, at which point he is directed to back away from it. However, at 03:23, he appears to change his mind again, seizing the knife and using the car as temporary cover. He is again warned to drop the knife. At 03:50, he charges the officers with the knife and is shot. The officers maintain an L-shape formation to avoid crossfire. Swenor falls to the ground, still holding the knife. As the officer moves his support hand, it can be seen that Swenor has dropped the knife at 04:25.

At 04:31, footage begins from the other officer's perspective. At 06:51, a clearer perspective is given of Swenor dropping, and then retrieving, the knife. A second angle of Swenor dropping the knife after being shot is shown at 07:45. A depiction of Swenor stabbing a man while in the officers' presence is shown at 08:00. At 09:01, a camera in the car of the backup officers records Swenor's arrest. The compilation ends with a bystander's cell phone recording of the incident from a nearby rooftop. The overhead angle gives a good view of the officers' movement and spacing.

The first victim, who reported Swenor to the police, was not injured. The second, who was struck, receieved medical attention and was released, with the third victim, who was stabbed, hospitalized but stable. As of the time of writing (06-07-23) Swenor is in critical but stabilized condition, having been booked for attempted murder with a $2.125 mil bond.
