(NSFW) Fatal Headshot on Suspect Ends Intense Shootout With Escondido Officer

Escondido Police Department have released body worn footage from an incident which occurred on September 17th, 2021. The incident left a 20-year-old male bystander wounded and a 38-year-old male suspect deceased.

At approximately 5:01 p.m., dispatch received a 911 call, stating a male, driving a white Mercedes SUV shot into their vehicle, striking the driver in his back. The victims were able to provide dispatch with a verified license plate number that matched the vehicles description. Nearly an hour later at approximately 6:12 p.m., Escondido officer Hoppal was able to make contact with the suspected vehicle, where a dangerous high-speed chase ensued.

Only eight-minutes later, the high-speed chase ultimately concluded, after the suspect lost control of his SUV and crashed in the area of Bear Valley Parkway and Encino Drive. Seconds after the crash occurred, officer Hoppal exited his now disabled cruiser. As officer Hoppal rounded the front-side of his cruiser, the suspect had also exited his SUV, armed with a handgun. Quick on the draw, officer Hoppal observed the suspects weapon and immediately began returning fire.

Officer Hoppal was successful during the engagement and neutralized his suspect with a fatal shot to the head. In total, officer Hoppal discharged twelve shots, striking the suspect in the upper left arm, abdomen, and head. As indicated by an additional responding officers verbal comment, it was clear the suspect was deceased on the scene, however he was transported to an area hospital where he was officially pronounced dead. The suspect was identified as Jonathan Carroll. During a later investigation, two casings were identified to have been discharged from Carroll's weapon. While searching Carroll’s vehicle, two additional unmarked weapons were located in the rear of the vehicle, with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

As for the 20-year-old bystander, he reportedly drove himself to an area hospital, where he was treated for his gunshot wound and released later that day.
