On September 17, 2022, around 1:20 p.m., Southeast Division patrol officers responded to a 9-1-1 call for domestic violence. When they arrived, they were confronted by a man with a rifle.

Officers immediately attempted to get the suspect, 19-year-old Luis Herrera to put the gun down, but the teenager refused to comply and instead advanced towards the officers with the rifle shoulders. This immediately prompted the officers to move to cover on the side of the house, where they discharged their service pistols to stop the threat.

As other members of the LAPD arrived on scene, they cleared the suspect and began rendering life-saving aid. Paramedics would take over life-saving efforts shortly after they arrived, but would later pronounce Herrera deceased at the scene of the incident.

Upon further investigation, it would be discovered that Herrera was armed with an airsoft replica rifle and handgun. No signs of domestic violence were found at the home, and no officers or bystanders were injured.
