On August 22, 2022, members of the Sparks Police Department responded to a frantic 9-1-1 call about a man wielding a knife threatening to stab his wife and 18-year-old son.

As soon as responding officers arrived at the scene of the incident, they immediately heard yelling and screaming coming from the apartment. Two officers then quickly maneuvered up the stairs to the apartment where they found the suspect, 59-year-old Francisco Pena, standing in the doorway armed with a knife. Behind Pena within one-arm's distance was the man's son.

After giving Pena several verbal warnings to drop the knife, officers were forced to use lethal force. While Pena cannot be clearly seen on the body worn camera footage, responding officers stated that he presented a clear threat to both the son behind him and the officers attempting to make entry into the apartment.

Immediately following the shooting, officers moved into the apartment and cleared it of any threats. Once the apartment and Pena were cleared, officers provided Pena with life-saving-aid until paramedics relieve them at the scene of the shooting. Pena was then transported to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead.
