(NSFW) Car Crash Turns Deadly After Driver Pulls Knife On First Responders

The Raleigh Police Department has released body camera footage regarding an incident that happened on January 11th, 2022, showing the moments officers used deadly force against a man swinging a knife at first responders.


In the early afternoon of January 11th, officers were dispatched to a vehicle rollover incident on the side of Interstate 440. Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported the vehicle rollover and additionally indicated the vehicle had been driving erratically down I-440. Reports have indicated that before the reported crash, an additional 9-1-1 caller had been run off the road just a few miles away.


Upon arriving at the scene, the crashed vehicle driver, later identified as Daniel Turcios, became violent and distressed with the situation. Shortly after police and firefighters arrived, Turcios pulled a bladed weapon from his pocket and began swinging it at first responders. Officers commanded Turcios to drop the weapon; however he refused to comply. In an attempt to disarm Turcios, officers used a less lethal taser. The taser was successful, but officers were unable to retrieve the bladed weapon in time.


After a few brief moments of being stunned, Turcios stood up and lunged the knife toward police. In response, officers discharged lethal rounds from their service weapons, striking Turcios and neutralizing him. During initial investigations, it was believed that Turcios was intoxicated; however no toxicology reports have been released. Turcios' family, joined by social justice activists, spoke publicly, questioning the police narrative about Turcios being intoxicated and threatening officers with a knife.


The family later stated that "Turcios was disoriented from being knocked unconscious in the crash and from not being a native English speaker.
