During an intense hostage situation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, officers attempt to negotiate with a hostage taker wielding a hand grenade, but are ultimately unsuccessful and are forced to use lethal force.

In the footage provided, we can see the responding officer conversing with the suspect, presumably negotiating to let the hostage go. Reports have stated, this all began during an attempted robbery that went wrong. After the police arrived on the scene, the suspect grabbed a nearby local and began holding her hostage, in a desperate attempt for his asylum.

Little did he know, there was a Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (BOPE) sniper setup a few blocks away, waiting for the perfect opportunity. For those unfamiliar, BOPE is a tactical police unit, similar to SWAT, that receive extensive urban warfare training. In addition, units like BOPE are equipped with more powerful equipment than regular law enforcement, due to the high value operations they conduct like the situation provided here.

With proper training and patience, this situation panned out perfectly. As seen in the footage, within a split second of the hostage bending over, the BOPE sniper fires a single round, striking the suspect directly in the head. With the precise shot, the by-standing officer was able to disarm the suspect of his hand grenade, as the hostage ran away. Reports state no innocent individuals or officers were injured during this incident.
