Mother of all Bombs Dropped on ISIS-K in Afghanistan (2017)

Published June 20, 2021

In 2017, 96 Islamic State Fighters in Afghanistan were killed by a single GBU-43/B MOAB. MOAB is an acronym that stands for 'Mother of all Bombs.'

On April 13, 2017, 96 members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) were killed in a singular attack by the United States Air Force. The device used was a single GBU-43/B MOAB, and it was dropped on a tunnel complex in the Achin District of Afghanistan. A full BDA was conducted, and it was determined that the strike killed nearly ever ISIS-K member inside of the tunnel system.

The GBU-43/B, also known as the 'Mother of all Bombs' is one of the world's largest non-nuclear weapons in the world. Since 2003, 15 total GBU-43/Bs have been manufactured at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant in McAlester, Oklahoma. The total cost of each bomb, as of 2003, is $170,000 USD. However, no more GBU-43s have been created since the initial batch. If a large number of them were required to be made today, that total price would probably be much higher thanks to inflation and the rise in cost in some of the key components of the device.
