Knife Wielding Suspect Taunts Deputy With Knife And Gets Shot (NSFW)

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office has released body camera footage from and incident that occurred on October 4th, 2021, which left one suspect deceased after a deputy involved shooting. At approximately 2:45 a.m., Kalamazoo County Consolidated Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a Shell gas station located on 35th street in Galesburg, Michigan.

During the call, the caller provided minimal information to dispatchers regarding the situation, however the caller assured it was an emergency and they needed deputies to respond. As a Kalamazoo deputy arrived in the area, he was immediately met by 22-year-old R.V. Johnson, who was armed with a bladed object. Johnson began commanding the deputy to back up, where he shortly after lunged at the deputy.

As the threat level jumped, the responding deputy drew his firearm and requested additional units for support. Shown in the body worn footage, from the initial confrontation, to the deputy involved shooting, only one minute had elapsed. After providing nearly a dozen verbal commands, Johnson continued to move aggressively toward him with his blade. Johnson, making multiple short lunges toward the deputy resulted in the deputy firing a single shot, striking him and neutralizing him from advancing further.

Galesburg and Charleston fire/rescue arrived on scene and provided life-saving medical aid, however Johnsons gunshot wound proved to be fatal. Johnson was pronounced deceased on the scene. This incident is still under further investigation.
