Iranian Militia Targets US Logistics With IED In Baghdad

Two US logistics convoys were reportedly targeted by roadside bombs in the vicinity of Baghdad on Jan. 9, 2022. A video of one of the attacks was produced and posted to social media by an Shia Iranian-facilitated militia.

Iraqi officials reporting on the attacks stated that no equipment was damaged in either of the insurgent operations. However, a woman and her two children were injured as their vehicle was traveling in close proximity to the device at the time of detonation.

At first glance it appears the blast was underwhelming and ineffectively far away from its target. However, Shia militias have long since perfected the development of directional, shape-charged explosively formed penetrator IEDs, which launch a piece of copper capable of defeating even the thickest vehicle armor. If aimed and timed correctly, this mediocre-looking blast could have sent its projectile through the engine block of the transported military vehicle, rendering it a total loss.

Attacks by Iranian-led militias against US targets have increased significantly in the past week. Most of which were thought to coincide with the two-year anniversary of the US drone strike against Iranian General Soleimani. However, some outlets are suggesting these two IED attacks were timed with the first meeting of Iraq's new parliament, which has just entered into session to elect a speaker. Iran and its Iraqi counterparts were not happy with the most recent election results.
