On September 13, 2022, Deputies from the York County Sheriff's Office were engaged in a high pursuit that ended in an officer involved shooting when the suspect attempted to use his vehicle as a deadly weapon.

The suspect, 25-year-old T. Malik Benjamin, was spotted in a stolen vehicle at an apartment complex. As Deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect, he sped off in the vehicle making a break for the highway. Once on the highway, Benjamin lead the deputies on a 24-minute-long high speed pursuit with speeds reaching up to 90 miles per hour.

Deputies stayed with Benjamin all the way until a CVS pharmacy where they managed to box him in outside of the drive-thru window. When the first deputy exited his vehicle, Benjamin attempted to ram the door of the police cruiser into the deputy which could have killed him. Deputies responded with lethal force, shooting Benjamin three times.

After the release of the dash mounted camera footage, Sheriff Kevin Tolson defended his deputies in a statement saying "They did what they had to do."

Benjamin was transported to a nearby medical facility by EMS where he would later succumb to his injuries. No deputies were injured.
