Early Footage of the Free Syrian Army in Hama, Syria

Footage from the Free Syrian Army before their ranks were filled with radicalized jihadists is rare. This is combat footage coming out of Hama, Syria in 2012, right around the start of the Syrian Civil War.

After watching the Syrian Civil War unfold over the course of a decade, it's very easy to forget where it all started. The Syrian Civil War was sparked when people inside of Syria decided they had had enough of their tyrannical ruler. The Free Syrian Army was formed as a way for the people to declare their independence from their dictator, and footage of that organization in its purest form is actually kind of rare. This footage is footage of just that, members of the Free Syrian Army fighting for their freedom from oppressions.

As the conflict in Syria continued to worsen however, so too did the brand of the Free Syrian Army. Early on in the conflict, Assad released a number of radical jihadists from prison knowing that they would intermingle with the Free Syrian Army. This caused it to be very difficult to support the FSA, as every group that was in opposition to the Syrian Arab Army, and Regime Forces was branded with the label of FSA. This includes the extremist factions who didn't care so much about freeing people from oppression as much as they did in having their brand of Islam be the dominant faction in the area.
