Deputy and Suspect Play "Bumper-Cars" at Dangerously High Speeds

The Marion County Sheriff's Department released dashcam and body camera footage from an incident that occurred on November 13th, 2021, where one man attempted to slam his vehicle into a pursuing Law Enforcement Officer during an intense high-speed chase.

The pursuit began after Deputy Hernandez-Ortega spotted a Lincoln sedan, reportedly stolen, on Highway 441. As Deputy Hernandez-Ortega attempted a traffic stop, the suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Charles Poland, ignored the flashing lights, and proceeded to flee, heading westbound on Highway 484.

The pursuit led deputies onto Marion Oaks Boulevard, where one deputy successfully deployed stop sticks, disabling multiple tires on the stolen vehicle. As indicated in the dashcam footage, Deputy Hernandez-Ortega attempted to approach the vehicle for a PIT maneuver, however Poland retaliated by slamming on his brakes and veering into Deputy Hernandez-Ortega cruiser.

Ultimately, Deputy Hernandez-Ortega regained composure and attempted a PIT maneuver a second time. With the vehicle disabled, Poland exited the stolen car, where a short foot chase ensued. Leading himself to a dead-end in the wood line, Deputy Hernandez-Ortega successfully deployed a less than lethal taser, striking Poland and subduing him.

Poland was booked and is currently being held without bond at the Marion County Jail. Since the incident, Poland is facing multiple charges, to include the following: fleeing and eluding law enforcement, grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

No deputies were injured during this incident.
