Deputy and Motorist Sucked Underwater in Torrential Thunderstorm, Florida

This bodycam footage depicts an Escambia Co. Sheriff's Deputy and his rescue of a stranded motorist during the powerful thunderstorms that struck the Southeastern United States on Friday, 06/16/23. As he tries to reach the driver, both are sucked underwater and through 100 feet of drainage pipe, under four-lane US Highway 98, and out the other side.


The deputy approaches the driver at 0:28, and entering the water, is completely sucked under at 0:45. He and the civilian spend approximately 30 seconds underwater, during which they are sucked through the drainpipe. The deputy's bodycam and mic become recognizable again at 01:13, with the officer calling for the motorist. At 01:37, the deputy makes it to him, exclaiming "Can you believe what just F- happened to us?" The two consider the incredibly near reality that they almost died as the storm continues to rage overhead. They embrace at 02:13 in a very emotional moment.


At 03:00 the footage cuts to the arrival of a backup officer, to whom they explain their ordeal. At 03:41, the motorist expresses a desire to waive medical, but they share a handshake and an incredibly unique bond. "Me and you, man."
