Mesa PD released a video showing a bewildering officer-involved-shooting that is currently under investigation, however, the officer in question resigned from the police force following the incident.

The footage shown is a body worn camera recording taken by a backup officer, because for whatever reason, the shooting officer didn't turn his on. From the report, the incident took place on July 2, 2022 and the traffic stop took place because the officer saw the suspect vehicle swerve.

From the backup officer's footage, we see the shooting officer attempt to open the door to have the driver step out. We don't know exactly what verbal exchange took place leading up to that because of the lacking body cam footage. He was likely using a reasonable suspicion of intoxicated driving based on the reason for the traffic stop.

The driver decided he didn't want to get out and drove off to flee the scene. Apparently, the officer that is being investigated thought that the undermining of his authority by the driver was justification to kill him and fired two shots at him as he drove away.

Both bullets impacted the vehicle, but the driver was unharmed. The driver then drove into a nearby Indian reservation where the police had no jurisdiction to enter.

While the incident was being investigated, the officer that fired the rounds resigned from the Mesa police force.
