On March 31, 2021 Chicago Officers attempted to make an investigatory stop on an armed individual. The suspect later identified as Anthony Alvarez, was spotted walking into a convenient store with a firearm.
As Alvarez exited the store, Officers turned on their lights in an attempt to stop the suspect and further investigate why he had a firearm. Alvarez, caught off guard by the cruisers lights began fleeing the scene on foot, where the chase would stop only a block and a half away.
Alvarez took to they alley ways an backyards shortly after the chase began, forcing Officers to exit their cruiser and begin in a foot chase. Finally catching up to Alvarez, one Officer spots a firearm in one hand and a phone it the other. The Officer takes five shots at Alvarez moments after repeating "Drop the gun, drop the gun!".
Alvarez now wounded on the ground asks Officers "Why are you shooting me", receiving a response instantaneously "You have a gun" from the Officers.
The Officers begin to offer medical treatment to Alvarez as he lies there wounded, but become hesitant due to Alvarez's movement. He continued to roll around on the ground, reaching in his pockets and for his phone.
Shortly after the shooting, Alvarez rolls onto his back and becomes unconscious. Officers begin conducting CPR on Alvarez until a medical unit arrived. Alvarez was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
