APD Officers Neutralize Suspect Firing Gun At Bystanders Near Motel

The Austin Police Department has released body camera footage from an officer involved shooting that occurred on January 29th, 2022.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., APD officers were dispatched to the 7100 block of North Interstate 35, after a 9-1-1 caller heard multiple gunshots outside of a restaurant. In a witness statement received by APD, a restaurant employee stated she saw the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Terry Gonzales, walking past the restaurant door, and firing a weapon multiple times at another person.

As responding officers responded to the area, they were immediately met by a female subject who observed Mr. Gonzales fleeing to a nearby motel. While searching the area, APD officers located Mr. Gonzales walking out of a breezeway, still armed with a handgun. Officers commanded Mr. Gonzales to drop the weapon; however he continued ignoring officers commands. In response to Mr. Gonzales actions, officers discharged their service weapons, striking Mr. Gonzales and neutralizing him.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics took Gonzales to a local hospital where he was treated and later released. After his release, Gonzales was taken to the Travis County Central Booking Facility, where he was charged with aggravated robbery related to the shooting reported before police arrived.
