Apache Provides Fire Support for Hoist Medevac

A medevac platform finds itself in an unusual position as it attempts a dangerous hoist medical evacuation while the ground troops are still in contact and an Apache shows off its support capabilities.

Hoist medevacs were fairly rare throughout the Global War on Terror. For the most part, you would get to a safe location where the medevac platform could land to on-board the casualty. In the mountain of Afghanistan however, this was sometimes an impossibility. In the rare instances where a hoist was needed to evacuate a casualty, you would often need the area to be completely secure to protect the aircraft from being shot down.

This video, on top of being a rare hoist medevac, is an anomaly. It shows an AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter providing fire support to troops in contact while another helo performs a hoist medevac with the troops on the ground still in contact. There are several points in this video where you can hear the excitement in the ground controller as he coordinates both the medical evacuation of a wounded troop, and the fire support of the AH-64.
