A Russian helicopter appears to have accidentally fired on spectators during a massive international training operation. As a result, two people, most likely journalists, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Two vehicles were also destroyed.
The operation is called Zapad 2017, and is one of the largest training exercises conducted by Russia since the Cold War. The drills simulate fending off Western militaries. Russia claimed the joint operation with Belarus only involved 12,700 troops. According to an international agreement, any country conducting a training exercise involving more than 13,000 troops must send out invites to foreign military leaders to observe. However, the US and other Western nations say that Zapad 2017 is actually being conducted by well over 100,000 troops.
