A video has surfaced capturing the moment of Saturday’s blasts in Kabul that killed at least 80 people and wounded an additional 231 at what was supposed to be a peaceful protest.
The Afgh/Pak branch of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the twin suicide attacks, while the Taliban denied any involvement. Those targeted were of the Shia Hazara minority, who make up around nine percent of the Afghan population. The Hazara people often find themselves the target of discrimination and violent attacks at the hands of Sunni Muslims.
The Hazaras were protesting a proposed power line that will run from Turkmenistan to Kabul. The protestors claimed the power line was unjustly routed away from areas with high populations of Hazara people.
