General Lloyd Austin confirmed to the Senate Armed Services Committee that US Spec Ops troops are on the ground assisting YPG forces in Syria in the fight against ISIS. He elaborated (most likely with fingers crossed behind his back) that the elite troops are not engaged in any combat operations.
The announcement, although not surprising, adds more complexity to the situation in Syria, as Turkey continues its bombing and military operations against Kurdish PKK guerrillas, a force that is aligned with, and at times, interconnected with the YPG.
The information was announced as a result of an investigation into whether CENTCOM was coercing intel analysts into skewing their reports to make it seem as if the campaign against ISIS was more effective than it actually is.
