US Marines jammed an Iranian drone over the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, causing it to fall from the sky, thereby destroying it.
The Marines aboard USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, took defensive action against the Iranian drone which had been closely shadowing them at a distance of approximately 1,000 meters. They employed the new Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System (LMADIS) fixed to an all-terrain vehicle to bring the drone down.
Trump told reporters in a press release that the drone was threatening the safety of the ship and the crew, so it was immediately destroyed.
The Iranian government denied any of their drones were destroyed, and added that their drones operating in the area at the time had flown safely back to base.
The incident is just another escalation of tensions in the oil shipping region. An oil tanker “Riah” went missing earlier in the week and Iran has now admitted to detaining it for smuggling oil. They likely intercepted it as retribution for the British SAS and Royal Marines detaining an Iranian supertanker which was smuggling oil into Syria.
