The US Navy 6th Fleet released a video showing an “unsafe” intercept of an American EP-3 Aries aircraft by a Russian Su-27 Flanker.

The incident happened on Nov. 5, 2018 in international airspace over the Black Sea. The Navy is calling the Russian pilot’s action unsafe because of the high speed pass maneuver directly in front of the EP-3, which jeopardized the safety of the American flight crew.

The SU-27 made another unsafe pass, thrusting its afterburner while banking right next to the Aries. The crew of the EP-3 reported turbulence and vibrations from the Russian maneuvers.

“While the Russian military is within its right to exercise within international airspace, this interaction was irresponsible. We expect them to behave within international standards set to ensure safety and to prevent incidents, including the 1972 Agreement for the Prevention of Incidents On and Over the High Seas (INCSEA). Unsafe actions‎ increase the risk of miscalculation and potential for midair collisions,” a statement said on the Commander of US Naval Forces Europe-Africa – U.S. 6th Fleet Youtube channel.
