U.S. Iraq War veterans have a hard time watching the Middle Eastern turf they fought tooth and nail for falling back into jihadist hands. We had brothers die retaking Ramadi and Mosul and now we see it was all in vain. The good people of Sinjar took us in and fed us. We lived amongst them and they were so welcoming. Now many of them are dead or dispersed into oblivion.
Some combat vets refuse to accept this new reality and are returning to volatile Iraq to fight alongside the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and wage an offensive against ISIS. The gesture is more than symbolic. The vets are using their combat experience and years of training to find purpose while confronting evil and crushing it, and they continue to take ground.
