Two Canadian service members were stabbed during an unprovoked attack at their recruiting station in Toronto yesterday by a man who claimed that Allah told him to go there and kill people.
Ayanie Hassan Ali, a 27-year-old Canadian citizen, approached a Toronto recruitment center with a very large knife, at which point a master corporal attempted to stop him from entering. The service member was stabbed, and several more soldiers swarmed the knife-wielding criminal to subdue him. A second service member sustained knife wounds during the ordeal, but thanks to the troops’ courage and teamwork, the threat was neutralized before any further damage could be done. The wounded troops received non life-threatening injuries.
Ali has been charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a weapon, one count of weapons dangerous and one count of aggravated assault. He has no prior criminal record, and while authorities are looking into whether this attack was an act of terror, they are also encouraging people to not lump all Muslims in with the deeds of a single individual.
A year and a half ago Canadian troops were the target of two separate Islam-motivated attacks. One soldier, an honor guard at a war memorial was shot two days after a warrant officer was intentionally rammed with a vehicle.
