The US-led coalition Operation Inherent Resolve announced on Tuesday that multiple US airstrikes and US-coordinated operations against ISIS have been carried out since President Trump’s declaration of an immediate and full withdrawal of US forces in Syria.
A press release titled “CJTF-OIR continues partner support to Defeat ISIS” boasted of precision airstrikes and coordinated fires severely degrading the Islamic State’s capabilities and their command and control structure.
The press release undermines the president in two ways. First, it admits that ISIS has not been “defeated” in Syria as Trump bragged during his withdrawal announcement. More importantly, it shows the OIR command structure is still openly operating in Syria after Trump’s immediate pullout announcement.
Trump’s announcement to pull out of Syria triggered the resignations of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and top anti-ISIS diplomat Brett McGurk.
