President Trump is pushing to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization, which would freeze their financial assets, impose travel restrictions, and make it illegal for any American to do business with the group.
The Muslim Brotherhood is a global Sunni fundamentalist movement founded in Egypt in 1928. Its goal is to establish an Islamic Caliphate governed by Shari’ah Law, which sounds strikingly similar to the goal of both al Qaeda and the Islamic State.
The problem with a terror designation being slapped on the Muslim Brotherhood is that they are so deeply ingrained in Middle East politics. Some of our closest allies’ governments in the region are tied in with the group. Tunisia and Jordan support the Muslim Brotherhood, as does Turkey’s Erdogan.
There’s always the possibility that some of our politicians are in bed, or wallet, with the group as well.
However, accepting the status quo just because it has been the norm for so long is not the right thing to do. Although the Muslim Brotherhood publicly denounces violence and terrorism, it’s members have repeatedly been involved in acts of terrorism over the decades.
More recently, Hasm and Liwa al-Thawra (both US designated terror organizations) formed from the Muslim Brotherhood and continue to operate in Egypt. Where does their constant supply of funding and weapons come from? Ever heard of Hamas? They’re an offshoot of the group as well. Plenty of al-Qaeda members are, or were members of the Brotherhood as well.
For a group that claims to not be involved in terrorism… they sure do churn out a lot of terrorists…
