Christmas came early this year for Syrian president Assad in the form of shiny new TOS-1A Heavy Flame Throwers gifted from Russian president Putin. Assad wasted no time in putting them to work and demonstrating their capabilities against rebel groups in Latakia.
The TOS-1A isn’t your typical multiple launch rocket system. Often mounted on a T-72A main battle tank chassis, and firing incendiary and thermobaric (fuel-air) warheads, these munitions can make short work of infantry, vehicles, and even the occupants of deep, fortified bunkers.
