It has been a long time coming, but the Syrian Defense Force has declared victory over the Islamic State in the terror organization’s last known stronghold of Baghouz, Syria. The fighting between the two factions lasted for almost 10 weeks as the terror organization struggled to maintain ground against the better equipped and trained SDF fighters. In the end however, the outcome was as expected with the Kurdish group of SDF troops coming out decisively in control of the area the Islamic State once occupied.
Reporters from Sky News were on the ground at the conclusion of the fighting, and released the following video report on the situation. It is interesting to see the reporter walking through areas that just a week ago were fully controlled by Islamic State fighters.
Only time will tell what is next for the areas and people formerly controlled and devastated by the Islamic State. It will also be interesting to see what is next for our Kurdish allies who have fought day in and day out on the battlefield against the massively powerful terror organization.
As for the Islamic State, while they are defeated on the battlefield, the group itself will probably remain at large for sometime as an underground terror organization. They may not control land, and their logistical chain may be in shambles, but the terror organization itself still has human and monetary capital to spend trying to regain their footing. We can only hope that the defeat of the organization on the battlefield is enough to disenfranchise the group’s fighters into leaving the organization.
