The Russian Naval vessel destroys the Somali pirates’ boats with an AK-630 CIWS (close-in weapon system), comparable to the Phalanx used by the US Navy. Depending on the variant, this gun may have one or two, six barreled, 30mm gatling guns capable of firing either 5,000-10,000 rounds a minute.
Commercial mariners and logistic companies have really stepped up security measures when following bearings that come within close proximity to Somali waters. Additionally, the mutlinational Combined Task Force 150, a coalition of 25 different nations’ maritime forces, patrol the region solely for pirates.
The pirates see the potential for earning huge sums of money by taking over large vessels and holding the cargo and hostages for ransom. However, with the before mentioned counter-piracy naval assets in the area, the risk of death is ever present.
