A Hawaii-based soldier is being treated for injuries after falling into an active volcano last week in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
The 32-year-old service member ignored well-marked safety barriers to get a better view of the volcano. He ended up loosing his footing on the rim and fell into the volcanic crater.
The injured service member was discovered two hours later, 70 feet below the ledge from which he slipped. It took a crew of military, firefighters, and park rangers to rescue the man. He was recovered with a military helicopter outfitted with a litter on a hoist.
