A video filmed in 2008 in the Korengal Valley shows US Army Paratroopers from Battle Company, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, come under accurate enemy fire while attempting to evacuate an Afghan casualty at OP Dallas.
From the video description we can gather that a local Afghan contractor had been wounded during the attack, and as the Sky Soldiers attempted to load him into a Humvee and transport him to the LZ, one of the soldiers was hit by enemy fire.
Although the video quality is extremely grainy, one can see the nightmarish situation these soldiers were placed in. The terrain is unforgiving and high ranking officers (that never had to set foot in these fire bases) picked extremely indefensible locations to place fighting units. The enemy always had the high ground, and as you can see, any casualties had to be transported to a different location before MEDEVAC birds could pick them up.
Even though the paratroopers took wounded during the extraction, they didn’t even consider abandoning the wounded local national, and made sure he got to cover with them.
